My still life paintings spring from my love of the physical world, especially everyday objects, furniture, and plants, and my first paintings and drawings were done from the objects around me. Both my childhood and adult homes have been filled with sensual, hand-crafted objects and art objects from around the world, inspiring a realistic approach to still life painting at first, which later became more abstract. Colorful , richly textured, and with strong form, and my still life paintings celebrate the sensual aspects of both subject and media. And my still lifes are frankly decorative, using bold color, line, texture, and pattern to animate strong compositions. Although always mindful of the abstract potential of art, I love painting still lifes because objects provide a foil for unexpected twists of dimension, design, and allusion. I often use patterns to activate the space around the objects in my still lifes, creating the patterns in collage or painting. Objects are merely temporary configurations of energy and matter into recognizable forms, and both "solid" form and "empty" space are full of energy. With patterns and color around the forms, I like to represent both form and energy -- a moment of visual balance between figure and ground, stability and motion, excitement and composure.
