My drawings may be expressionistic, realistic, abstract, or decorative; they may be bold and simple or sensitive and detailed; they may use a sensual line or a passionate stroke -- but I think my drawings all say the same thing: Drawing is fun to do and fun to look at! In fact, I love every kind of drawing, from simple black-on-white line drawings in graphite, charcoal, or ink, to richly textured drawings in colored media such as dry or oil pastel and colored pencil. I love line, and a strong line drawing provides the foundation for almost all my figure paintings, no matter how abstract or removed from reality they may become. My lifelong quest in drawing has been to develop an expressive, spontaneous, and fluid line and stroke. Therefore I especially like drawing from the figure and plants, because of the figure's or plant's sensuous forms and the "life" and energy they bring as subjects to the act of drawing. My figure drawings always begin with live models. For male figures, I like to emphasize the complexity of the musculature of the figure with interesting line and shading; with female figures I do more abstractions from the major sensuous shapes of the body. The inspiration for my figure drawings and paintings comes from powerful Renaissance realists like Michaelangelo, and modern masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh. Contemporary art has branched off in many new directions, but figure drawing adapts and retains its universal appeal over the centuries. Whether attracted by color, form, movement, or expression, I begin with media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the figure. This spontaneous figure drawing may complete the art, or I may work the figure into a complex composition, often playful, energized with pattern and collage. I often draw over painted backgrounds or collage to add rich colors or textures to traditional drawing media like graphite or colored pencil. Adding collage and other media to my drawings contributes intensity that is hard to achieve in graphite, for example, or detailing that is hard to achieve in expressionistic pencil or pastel work.
