From my earliest years, my art has been colorful and abstract, including my landscapes, still lifes, figure paintings, sculpture, and even photography. My favorite drawing and painting subjects have been the human figure, decorative plants, and everyday objects. In all cases, bold but balanced compositions and intense color define my art. My stylistic inspiration comes from masters of sensuality like Gauguin, Klimt, Matisse, Degas, and Van Gogh, as well as contemporary decorative arts like quiltmaking and stained glass. My figurative work always begins with live models. I use media that are swift and sensual, and work quickly to capture the subject. This spontaneous portrayal may complete the art work, or I may work the subject into an elegant abstraction or a complex visual composition, energized with colorful patterns. My art celebrates the sensual aspects of both subject and media, and has a frankly decorative intent, using bold color, line, texture, and pattern to animate strong compositions. My Abstract and Non-Objective Art Abstract and non-objective art allow me to explore color, design, and the sensuality of the media with total freedom. In addition to abstract figures, still lifes, portraits, landscapes, and so on, I also create a unique non-objective art, which I call PATTERN ABSTRACTS. These are allover patterns or symmetrical designs, often very colorful, collages built up of layers of textures and decorative pieces in a quilt-like manner, similar to the third work above and the center images below. These abstracts arose from my study of traditional Japanese textiles, from my love of contemporary quilts and mosaics, and my photographic work with textures and multiple exposures.
